ABOUT ABOUT

Nothing accompanies local food as well as a delicious, locally brewed craft beer. So what could be more local -- or more fun -- than making your own?

Let Meredith Rebar and Garrett Williams, the dynamic couple behind Home Brewed Events, guide you through an introduction to the art and science of craft brewing. We'll even show you how to incorporate local, seasonal fruit into your recipes.

Students will learn about the history of beer and brewing, the ingredients (hops, barley, water and yeast), the equipment (both commercial and homebrew) and general beer trivia. While these topics are discussed, the class will be brewing a 5 gallon batch of beer so you can get hands-on experience and be able to brew at home. Post-class, we'll arrange for you to receive a bottle of our class's delicious, unique craft beer to enjoy!

Of course, we'll have some of the finished product on hand to enjoy during the class in the form of complimentary beer and cider from Philadelphia Brewing Co. Light local snacks from the Fair Food Farmstand will also be provided.

ABOUT HOME BREWED EVENTS

Home Brewed Events is a beer-brewing wonder couple -- Meredith Rebar and Garrett Williams -- who will teach you everything you need to know to brew in your own home (and then some). Meredith's interest in craft beer started when she was attending Penn State University and visiting Zeno’s Pub on a regular basis. She has been homebrewing for over four years and enjoys pushing the boundaries of beer styles. She has worked at Troegs Brewing Company in their Tasting Room and is an official member of the Pink Boots Society, which is for female brewers in the beer industry across the world.

Her partner in crime, Garrett, started out drinking the same sort of thing everyone did: Lionshead, Old Milwakee, Yeungling etc. Thanks to the devoted efforts of some truly inspirational drinkers (Meredith amongst them), he now approaches beer like a 19th century British explorer -- finding  new specimens, taking pictures, making notes and collecting trophies for like-minded explorers to “ooh” and “ahh” over. He's a coffee roaster by day and brewer by night, bringing the wild safari of craft beer to the masses.

ABOUT THE FAIR FOOD FARMSTAND

Located in the Reading Terminal Market, the Fair Food Farmstand carries a wide variety of products from more than 90 sustainable farms and food producers in Pennsylvania, New Jersey, and Delaware, including urban farms within the city of Philadelphia and is project of nonprofit organization Fair Food Philly. We emphasize local and artisanal foods from small-scale farms and producers, like humanely and pasture-raised meats, poultry and eggs; organic and specialty fruits and vegetables; and raw milk artisan cheeses.

Launched in 2003 to increase access to local food, the Farmstand offers the product mix of the best farmers markets with the convenience and accessibility of a grocery store. The Farmstand is open 7 days a week year-round, providing a steady wholesale market to our vendors and demonstrating the agricultural bounty of our region.

Proceeds from Fair Food's Education Series benefit our awesome instructors and our mission to promote sustainable agriculture in the Philadelphia region. Thanks to our 2014 sponsors, Philadelphia Brewing Co. and Commonwealth Ciders, who provide tasty local beverages for each event!
