Food School: Sourdough Bread with Philly Muffin's Pete Merzbacher

By Fair Food (other events)

Wednesday, February 25 2015 6:30 PM 8:30 PM EDT

ABOUT ABOUT

Join Fair Food and baker extraordinaire Pete Merzbacher of Philly Muffin to learn the secrets of great bread baking. Pete will share information about why local grains are best for bread, demonstrate the basics of sourdough bread making, and, of course, share some delicious samples of Philly Muffin products, which have achieved a cultlike following from the city's bread lovers. (We'll have some delicious local butter on hand, too.)

You will leave this class with all the knowledge and ingredients -- including 2 pounds of freshly milled, locally grown grains! -- to make delicious bread at home. You'll also get the instructor's contact information so if your first loaf collapses on itself, you can reach out to problem solve. If you ever thought about baking bread at home or you think your home-baked bread can be improved, this is the class for you. Just make sure to wear grubby clothes because you will get flour-ed!

Complimentary beverages from our Food School sponsors, Philadelphia Brewing Co. and Commonwealth Ciders, will be served.

Food School tickets are nonrefundable. This is a private event.

About Pete Merzbacher and Philly Muffin

Pete is the founder and baker at Philly Muffin. When he's not baking or eating bread, he's thinking of novel bread puns beyond the "rolling in the dough" "the dough is off the hook" "No need to knead" "baguette about it" and "bread winner." If you think of any, please pass them on.

Philly Muffins taste and toast better, contain nothing artificial, use locally grown grains, are naturally fermented, are larger in size, come in more flavors, and are made in Philadelphia. Philly Muffin is located at 4905 N. 5th St in the Olney ("ahl-i-nee") neighborhood. We're a block north of the Roosevelt Boulevard on 5th. We're proud to be a part of a community of bakers, with a handful of bakeries just blocks from our store.

About the Fair Food Farmstand

Located in the Reading Terminal Market, the Fair Food Farmstand carries a wide variety of products from more than 90 sustainable farms and food producers in Pennsylvania, New Jersey, and Delaware, including urban farms within the city of Philadelphia. We emphasize local and artisanal foods from small-scale farms and producers, like humanely and pasture-raised meats, poultry and eggs; organic and specialty fruits and vegetables; and raw milk cheeses.

Launched in 2003 to increase access to local food, the Farmstand offers the product mix of the best farmers markets with the convenience and accessibility of a grocery store. The Farmstand is open 7 days a week year-round, providing a steady wholesale market to our vendors and demonstrating the agricultural bounty of our region.
